Born in Norway in 1833 to Jens Bruun Bodtker and Freia Christine Bodtker, he immigrated to the United States with some of his family around 1850 and settled in Wisconsin and, later, Illinois. In the 1860 U.S. Census he is listed with his mother, Freia and three sisters: Caroline, Sarah, and Ana. He was married to his wife Clara sometime around 1870 but was divorced from her by 1900. They had one child, Frederick. James is best known for his photography and artwork, in particular photographs he took around the time of the Civil War which included Wisconsin soldiers and politicians.
