Bertha first married to Samuel Pickens and had eight children: Thelma, Belma, Joseph, Ira, Shirley Ralph, Gussie, Audrey and Naomi.
After Samuel's death she married to Manon Lanham. Bertha's third marriage was to John Bodkin.

Mrs. Bertha Ann Bodkin, 81, of Charleston, died Friday in St. Francis Hospital after a long illness.
Surviving: husband John; daughters, Mrs. Thelma Cossin of Ripley, Mrs. Belma Board of Paramount, Calif., Mrs. Audrey Barnett of Rock Castle, Mr. Naomi Flesher of Fairplain, Mrs. Parmalee Edens of St. Albans; sons, Edward Pickens of Harrisburg, Pa., Shirley Pickens of Parkersburg, Gus of Sandyville; stepdaughters, Mrs. Dorma Lacey of Milligan, Mrs. Mildred Jean Birthsel of Pinch; stepsons, Charles F. Bodkin of South Charleston, Johnny J. Bodkin of Virginia Beach, Va., sisters, Mrs. Ethel Rogers of Gay, Mrs. Mary Shannon of Huntington, brother Clarence Godbey of Stow, Ohio.
Service was held Monday in Elk Funeral Home. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery in Ripley. The Rev. Billy Lanham officiated.
