James, our subject was raised on his father's farm and received a good common school education. He has occupied his time in agricultural pursuits and is now the owner of 1,145 acres of land, well stocked and improved.
He is a prominent Mason and Odd Fellow, and is well respected by all who know him. In 1859 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Campbell, daughter of Joseph Campbell who was one of the old and respected pioneers of the county.
