Mrs. Don Blue Dies Monday At Her Home

Has Lived 60 Years in Eagle Grove, 54 Years In Same House, Mother of a Iowa Governor

Mrs. Don Blue, 86, died Monday at her home at 107 North Cadwell following several months of illness. The past few weeks her condition has become critical and she lost strength almost dally.

Funeral services will be held Thursday (today) at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church with Rev. Harrison G. Dawes officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Rose Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Blue was one of the few remaining pioneer residents of Eagle Grove. She had resided here for 60 years, 54 of those in the same house on North Cadwell.

Born in Vermont

Mrs. Blue was born in Shoreham, Vermont. At an early age she moved to Mankato, Minnesota, with her parents where she grew to young womanhood and graduated from the normal school there.

She returned east to teach in Vermont for four years. Coming back to Minnesota she taught in the Minneapolis schools for two years before marrying Don Blue and moving to Eagle Grove.

Mrs. Blue left her mark on both communities as a teacher and has many letters from former pupils in both places. After coming to Eagle Grove she continued to expend her energies as a volunteer teacher for young folks and friends.

A Strong Spirit

She was a woman of high moral character, staunch religious principles and an unquenchable spirit. Knowing that she was going to die and suffering great pain she continued to present a cheerful and optimistic outlook to the members of her family.

She was also a source of courage and determination to her sons and especially to her son Robert who became one of Iowa's Governors. She is survived by her two sons Robert and Russell who now practice law in Eagle Grove. By two grandchildren Don of Eagle Grove and Mrs. John W. (Barbara) Tow of Shirol, Japan. One son Paul and her husband Don preceded her in death. Her husband died in 1930 and was for many years an engineer on the C&NW. Previous to that he helped to build the Rock Island through this country being stationed at Iowa Falls.

Mrs. Blue achieved much local fame in her own right as well as being mother to one of Iowa's Governors.

Obituary

Myrtle Emily Newell, daughter of Clinton and Letitia Newell, was born in Shoeham, Vermont on March 22, 1868, on the shores of Lake Champlain, the home of the Green Mountain Boys of Revolutionary fame. She passed away at Eagle Grove on March 29th, 1954 at the age of eighty-six.

Early in childhood, she moved with her family to Moore's Forks. New York. In 1879, when she was eleven, the family moved to Pleasant Mound, Minnesota near Winnebago. The trip was made by boat through the Great Lakes during a storm so violent that cargo had to be thrown overboard to keep the boat from sinking.

She received her education in the public schools and the Normal School at Mankato, Minnesota, where she was graduated from a teachers' training course. At the age of eighteen, she returned to the east and taught school in Vermont and New York for four years. Later she returned to Minnesota where she taught in the Minneapolis schools until her marriage, September 4, 1894, to Donald Blue, who was for many years a railroad engineer.

Following their marriage, they came to Eagle Grove when it was a new town, and she has lived here for sixty years.

She was a member of the Presbyterian church, and for many years taught a Sunday school class in the Methodist church.

She was a member of the Eastern Star, G. I. A., and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Three children, Paul, Robert, and Russell were born to this home. Her husband and son, Paul, preceded her in death, as did her two sisters and two brothers.

Her two sons, Robert and Russell Blue, and two grandchildren Mrs. John W. Tow of Shirol, Japan, and Donald R. Blue of Eagle Grove, survive her, as well as several nieces and nephews living in the east and the west.
