TEACHER RESIGNS AFTER
YEARS OF SERVICE

Miss Emma Belle Blood of High School Faculty to Leave Field of Education

After nearly half a century spent in teaching, Miss Emma Belle Blood, instructor in English at the Oshkosh High school, will retire from the local school system at the end of the present semester.

Forty-three years as a teacher! That is the record of service accomplished by Miss Blood. With the exception of a few years, she has been steadily engaged in teaching since 1882-83, when she secured her first position in a rural school in Green Lake county.

For the last 19 years, Miss Blood has been located in one school - the Oshkosh High school. She has had the opportunity of watching the school grow and expand, and has witnessed the addition of the new buildings at the central school plant. The High school was housed in the "red brick" building when she joined the faculty in 1912.

During her teaching career, Miss Blood has been in various parts of the state. Her first experience was in Green Lake county. Following that, she was a teacher in a rural school in the town of Utica, Winnebago county.

She taught for several seasons in the rural schools near Florence, Wis., and after that was in the grade school at Bayfield. She was on the faculty of the high school at Algoma, at one time, and also taught for a few years in the Normal academy in this city [Oshkosh].

Miss Blood spent five years at Superior, having complete charge of the ninth grade division there. She was an instructor at the university high school, Madison, in 1911-12, just prior to coming to Oshkosh.

For a brief period, in 1898-1900, Miss Blood was located in Oshkosh, teaching seventh and eighth grades in the old Y. M. C. A. school.

Miss Blood was born near Ripon, Wis. She obtained her elementary schooling in the rural schools of Iowa. She was granted a life certificate for teaching in 1897 by the Oshkosh Normal school. She received a similar certificate from the University of Wisconsin in 1912.

During her career at the Oshkosh High school, Miss Blood has taught all classes, senior, junior, sophomore and freshmen, but most of her instruction has been in the junior class.

In 1930, the Index yearbook-incidentally the last yearbook issued at the Oshkosh High school - was dedicated to Miss Blood "-in appreciation of the untiring efforts of one who for 18 years has taught and inspired Oshkosh High school students, both in English classes and outside school hours-."

Miss Blood, at one time, was connected with the publication of The Index, as an adviser. She served consistently on the calendar committee, when printing the calendar and sales campaigns were annual features in the school.

One thing has always been noted about "Miss Blood's room" whenever campaigns of any sort are under way. Her room -No. 301- usually heads the list, 100 percent. Just what has been the secret, Miss Blood modestly declines to say, and for her part would rather let it remain an "unexplained secret." But results count, and Miss Blood has been able to get results, in a manner that has been dignified and which has excited cooperative efforts, rather than unwilling participation.

Miss Blood's written resignation was formally presented to the board of education at its last meeting. In accepting it, the school commissioners gave definite instructions to Supt. C. C. Bishop, asking him to convey to her the board's appreciation of her long period of service.

"What am I going to do, now that I'm retiring? Well, nothing exciting. I'm not planning to travel. I expect to go to Minnesota, where my brother and sister reside, not far from St. Paul. I expect to stay there permanently."
