Born in Pennsylvania on January 20, 1838, he moved with his family to Illinois. On June 10, 1861 he enlisted at Chicago as a private in the 19th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on June 10, 1861. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant
in the 17th U.S. Colored Infantry in December 1863. He was promoted to Captain commanding Company H of the 17th USCT in July 1865. He mustered out of the army on April 25, 1866. Lewis and three of his brothers immigrated to Marion County, Oregon approximately 1870.
Lewis served as U.S. Postmaster for Aumsville, Oregon.
