We also remember those who were Affiliated to our Institute on this day, April 20, 1967, Brother George Breen Bland MD, AFSC

George Breen Bland was born in Memphis on December 20, 1915. He was the son of Basil Alexander Bland (1887-1948) and Aileen Elizabeth (Clancy) Bland (1889-1954). "Breen" as everyone called him attended and graduated from Christian Brothers High School on the Parkway in the Class of 1933 and then went to college and medical school. He returned to Memphis and married Betty Moore (1921-2001) and they had eight children Teresa, Eileen, Betsy, Breen (Jr.), John, Michael, Patrick, and James. Upon his death the obituary in the local paper read "Dr. Bland advanced medicine on several fronts from blood transfusions to polio vaccinations. Dr. Bland was often on the cutting edge of medicine during his career as a surgeon general and general practitioner. He was 85 at his death and a graduate of CBHS and Alabama's Spring Hill College where he earned his medical degree in 1940 and what is now the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. He served on the staff of the former St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis from 1940-1942 and he helped introduce blood transfusions to the area. As a member of the Memphis & Shelby County Medical Society in 1954 he made his daughter a local pioneer by giving her a polio vaccination. He was perhaps best known as the doctor in years past who delivered a sex education talk for students at Catholic high schools. He was a consummate potter, creating beautiful pots, chalices and dishes." By 1968 he was Chief of Surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was inducted into his alma mater's Hall of Fame at CBHS. All his lifetime he tended to the medical needs and concerns of the Brothers and the students at Christian Brothers High School and Christian Brothers College and was known for his dry wit. He was a loyal supporter of Madonna Learning Center, the Monastery of St. Clair, and the Christian Brothers. Dr. Breen Bland was recommended for Affiliation to our Institute by the Brothers of Memphis and were granted Diplomas of Affiliation on April 20, 1967. Brother George Breen Bland AFSC died in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 12, 2001, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Memphis. Three months later, on December 25, 2001, Betty died and was laid to rest next to Breen at Calvary.

We pray for God's blessing on our living benefactors and affiliated members, and for eternal rest upon our beloved Brothers, affiliated members, friends, students, family, and benefactors who have died on this day. May perpetual light shine upon them, may their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
