Melvin Blakely

GREENVILLE — Melvin Blakely was born to the parentage of Henry (Soul) Blakely and Ida Bell Howard on Feb. 23, 1936, in Kilgore.

He received his education from public schools. Later serving in the United States Army from Sept.16, 1952 until Aug. 31, 1956, where he received an honorable discharge. He met and married his love, Rosie Lee Nichols in January of 1957.

Mr. Blakely worked for the Kansas City Southern Railroad Company for more than 30 years until retiring in 1985. He departed this life on Aug. 31, 2011.

Leaving to cherish his memories forever are his wife, Rosie Lee Blakely of Greenville; sons, Norbert Blakely (Arletha), Timmy Lee Blakely (Mary), Kelvin Lee Blakely, Tyson Davis, DaTarvis Traylor, all of Greenville, Melvin Blakely, Jr. (Gertrude) of Commerce, and Manual Jones (Tonya) of Fort Worth; daughters, Kim Broussard (Henry) of Lawton, Okla. and Alesha Smith of Greenville; sisters, Lorine Bray, Louise Camp, Inez Black, Mildred Diane Blakely, all of Greenville, and Earnice Blakely of Los Angeles, Calif., a brother,Billy Ray Blakely of Greenville; 21 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces,one sister-in-law and friends.

Mr. Blakely was preceded in death by one son, Marcus LaRay Blakely; his parents; two brothers and one sister.

Homegoing services for Melvin Blakely will be Tuesday at Bethel AME Church wth Elder Wesley Pierce, officiating at 11 a.m. followed by a burial at Grundy Memorial Park.

Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Grace & Mercy-Grundy, 2120 Hemphill, in Greenville which is in charge of arrangements.
