BLAIN - Senator Blain, after an illness of more than six months, quietly breathed his last at 11:20 Sunday night. His disease was tumor of the stomach, from which he suffered intensely at times. Senator Blain was born of Scotch parents at Blain's X Roads, E. Tennessee, on the 15th of May 1818, and at the age of 21 graduated at the East Tennessee University. He shortly afterwards removed to this place and in 1842 and '43 held the position of principal in the Seminary with much credit. Devoting his spare time to the study of law, he was at the close of the school admitted to the bar and in 1846 was elected County Attorney. As the nominee of the whigs he made the canvass for Representative in 1849 and was victorious. In 1853 on the same ticket he was elected to the State Senate and served his term of 4 years with much satisfaction to his constituency. He was again made County Attorney in 1866 and from an old line whig before the war, he became a conservative and strongly advocated a third party. In 1872, however he voted for Grant and has since in the main voted for the nominees of the republican party. It was on this ticket that he was elected State Senator in 1881, by a majority of 228, notwithstanding the district is largely democratic, his personal popularity winning him strong support from the opposing party. His course in the Senate was marked with an earnest desire to serve his constituency and no man labored harder, nor was respected more than he in that body. Honest as the days are long, conscientious and accomodating, a friend to the needy and the poor, he was loved by everyone and if he has an enemy, it was from no fault of his. He has done his State and county good service and is worthy of the reward promised the good and faithful in the great hereafter. For many years a member of the Presbyterian church, he lived up to its teachings and the summons found him ready and waiting. He leaves a wife and five children, who will miss his kind assistance and counsel and in their loss they will have the sincere sympathy of his thousands of friends. The Odd Fellows, of which society he was a bright and honored member, will take charge of his remains and at 12 o'clock to day will lay them to rest in Buffalo cemetery.

Senator Robert Blain, whose death is recorded in this issue, was a second cousin of Hon. James G. Blain, of Maine, and he took much pride in displaying a letter from him, acknowledging the relationship and attesting his appreciation of it.
