The supervisor of the Nez Perce National Forest, Grangeville, Idaho, former Oregonian A. W. Blackerby, 50 died Saturday night in Emanuel Hospital of burns suffered in an airplane crash Aug. 4 at Moose Creek, Idaho.
Blackerby was transferred from the Grangeville General Hospital to Emanuel Hospital Aug. 7. At the time it was reported that his injuries were serious but not critical.
The ford trimotor plane crash in the Idaho back country claimed the lives of two smoke jumpers from New York and injured the pilot and a smoke jumper supervisor. The plan overran the runway and crashed into a stack of gasoline barrels and exploded.
Blackerby was a native of Portland, a graduate of Benson High School and the University of Oregon. He received his master’s degree in forestry from Oregon State College. He left Oregon in 1939 and spent a number of years in Alaska with the forest service before assignment as supervisor of the Nez Perce National Forest.
