Dorothy Elaine was born in the Mt. Herman, Texas, to the late James Earl and Ruby Fults, their first child and the first grandchild of Mary and Benton Bell Fults. She was born in her grandparent’s home, a log house built sometime before the Civil War by her great-great-great-grandfather, Redman Choate. Her family was among some of the early settlers in Shelby County, coming to Texas in 1835.
Music was an important part of the Fults family life. Dorothy and her two sisters were the Fults Family Trio and performed at church, on local radio, and throughout the East Texas community. Dorothy played the baritone in the Center High School Roughrider Band, and in the Stephen F. Austin College Lumberjack Band.
She met Horace Black in Houston and they married in 1949, and moved to Teague in 1956. Dorothy loved to bake, especially cakes, garden, dance with Horace, and play forty-two. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Teague and sang in the choir for many years. She and Horace were MYF counselors when their kids were in junior high and high school. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Dickson Black; isters, Maxine Fults McSwaine and Betty Ruth Fults Ashley; brother, Thomas Earl Fults; and a granddaughter, Mary Grace Black.
Survivors include her daughters, Deborah Elaine Black Watt and husband, Chuck, of Manor, and Sandra Lea Black Annear and husband, Kenneth, of Waxahachie; son, Horace Dickson "Dick" Black and wife, Lucie, of Teague, seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
