The son of Andrew & Elizabeth (Foust) Bistline, he married Lydia Elizabeth Eby November 15, 1855, and fathered Aaron (b. 05/07/57), Amos C. (b. 03/23/59), Elizabeth Rosanna (b. 07/02/60), John Andrew (b. 10/26/65), Mary Ellen (b./d. @1867), Sarah C. "Sadie" (b. @1872, d. 1880), Margaret Susan (b. 12/17/74 - married William Albert Cover), and George William (b. 08/14/79). In 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Mifflin Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

He had a brief experience during the Civil War when he was drafted in Carlisle October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 1 as a private with Co. F, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), but was deemed unfit to serve and discharged by surgeon's certificate to date November 17, 1862.

Lydia died June 19, 1881, and he married the much younger Catharine lnu. and fathered Mabel (b. 02/??/89). Following Catharine's death, he lived with his son John and in 1894, a powerful lightning storm destroyed both the house and barn. He died there following protracted cardiac and renal illnesses.
