The only child of Charles Edwin and Nancy Philips Birdsall.
His mother Nancy died before he was 1 years old. His father Dr. Charles E. Birdsall age 30 b. Canada, Dentist on 1860 Census in Oquawka, IL. In 1856 he came from Michigan with his father Charles E. Birdsall and grandparents Timothy and Mary Birdsall. Because of the early death of his mother
he was given a mother's care by his aunt Mrs. Joseph Hall and then went to the home of Marion Moore. It is possible
his father and grandparents died between 1860-1870 in Oquawka, Illinois or Shenandoah, Page-Fremont counties, Iowa.

His grandparents were Timothy and Mary Birdsall. On

Benjamin Loder Birdsall married Louisa E. Livermore 24 Feb. 1873 Warren Co., IL., daughter of Derrick and Elizabeth Stevens Livermore. As a young child in the 1860 Federal Census, he is living with George W. Birdsall, Henry A. Birdsall, Timothy and Mary Birdsall.
