Martin "Wheeler" Bilbrey

Birth: Jan. 18, 1871
Tennessee, USA
Death: May 28, 1935
Tennessee, USA

Husband to Martha Jane Phipps Bilbrey. Son of Martha Jane Bilbrey Swallows. Mother and wife had same first name. Father to Alastus Bilbrey.

Wheeler was born before his mother was married. She later married a man named A.D. Swallows, but he was definitely not Wheeler's father even though some census records have him listed as a Swallows. Martha married A.D. Swallows when Wheeler was 8 years old. I am sure his mother never corrected the enumerator's assumption that all the children were Swallows.

Wheeler's father was said to be a man named Alvin Phillips. My Granny spent a very considerable portion of her life with her "Ma" and "Pa" so her first hand knowledge is all we can go by and she is the one who said her Pa was actually the son of Alvin Phillips.

Wheeler and Martha helped raise five of their granddaughters when their daughter-in-law died at a very young age.

At Pine Ridge Cemetery there is a handmade tombstone barely legible that was made by Wheeler for his grandmother Candis Townsend Bilbrey. Candis and Henry Harrison were the parents of Wheeler's mother Martha Jane Bilbrey Swallows. After the markings for Candis it reads, "Fixt by M.W. Bilbrey"

I always seem drawn to your story. And I am always surprised anew to realize you passed in 1935. Those first 15 years of my Granny's life you were always there for her. She talked so much to me of her Pa and Ma I feel like I surely should have known you m...(Read more)
