Bernadine died July 6, 2007. Services will be held Tuesday, July 10, at 11 a.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Charles Willard Bielby; and their three children: sons, Noble Willard Bielby, New Smyrna Beach, Lorence Jon Bielby and wife, Peggy, Tallahassee; daughter, Nina Margaret Bielby Bennett and husband, David, Westborough, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Mary Margaret Bielby, Caroline Seanor Bielby and Lorence Jon Bielby, Jr. of Tallahassee.
Mrs. Bielby, known as "Bernie" to her close friends and family, was born in Hastings, Nebraska and moved to DeLand in 1946 following her marriage. The Bielbys lived on the original Violetwood homestead property on Violetwood Road where they resided in the historic Bielby family home until it burned in 1954. They built a new home on the property, where they raised their family and continued the family tradition of growing citrus, including many unique specialty varieties, as well as tropical fruit and ferns.
Mrs. Bielby was an accomplished artist and art instructor, teaching art at Daytona Beach Community College for many years. She particularly enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, caring for her beloved animals, music and singing. She and her husband traveled extensively on the continent of North America, visiting every state except Hawaii as well as all Canadian Provinces and much of Central America. In 1994 they made a trip to England, which included a visit to the town of Bielby in Yorkshire. Mrs. Bielby was educated at Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., and attended the University of Florida, Gainesville, where she was one of the very first co-eds in 1946. At UF she was a charter member of the Women's Glee Club and was a member of the University of Florida Symphony Orchestra.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John J. Hofferber and Anna Margaret Hoffman Hofferber; and her two brothers, Elmo Ronald Hofferber and Evan M. Hofferber.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bernadine Bielby's name to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler Counties, or to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand.
