LEWISBURG — Karen Jean Aikey, 68, of Strawbridge Road, entered into the arms of the Lord on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by friends and family.
She was born April 22, 1943, in Lock Haven, a daughter of the late Russell Merill and Kathleen Lucille (Mardis) Bickle. She was raised throughout her childhood by the late Samuel E. and Mary V. (Bickle) Ishler as one of their own children on the family farm in Boalsburg. She was married to William Russell Aikey in 1964. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Karen graduated from State College Area High School in 1961 and was a 1962 graduate of the Bellefonte Area Nursing School.
She was employed as a licensed practical nurse by Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg for nearly 40 years until her retirement in 2009.
She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Lewisburg.
Karen enjoyed gardening, flowers and spending time with her family and friends. Her life was dedicated to helping others in need and to providing comfort to others.
Surviving are three sons, Michael P. Aikey and his wife, Riruko, of Laurelton, Christopher A. Aikey and his wife, Holly, of Mifflinburg, and Daniel S. Aikey and his wife, Debra, of York; seven grandchildren, Arisa, William, Jenna, Christopher Jr., Casey, Brian and Brandon; a sister, Linda Koch, of Centre Hall; and two brothers, Norman Bickle, of State College, and Russell Bickle, of Centre Hall.
Friends and relatives will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Lewisburg and 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's United Church of Christ, Buffalo Road, Lewisburg, where the funeral will follow with her pastor, the Rev. Paula M. Gustafson, officiating.
Burial will be in Boalsburg Cemetery, Boalsburg.
