Berton, Ambrose - Article published Apr 14, 2007 - Ambrose E. Berton, 86, of Coshocton, passed away suddenly Wednesday, April 11, 2007, while vacationing with his family in North Carolina. He was born Nov. 9, 1920, in Coshocton County, to the late Ernest and Matilda (Hiser) Berton. Ambrose graduated from Sacred Heart High School and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He served his country for three years guarding the Panama Canal. He retired from Edmont in 1986, after 47 years where he started as a factory worker and worked his way up to management. On June 24, 1948, he married E. Eileen (Mikesell) Berton, who survives. "Papa" to his granddaughters, "Daddy" to his children and "Ammy" or "Brose" to his wife and friends, he was an avid golfer for many years, devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as well as a member of Knights of Columbus and VFW 2040. Beloved husband, father and grandfather, his family cannot express how much he will be missed. He is survived by his son, Kevin Berton of Jacksonville, Fla.; three daughters, Kathy (Phil) Patterson of Columbus, Elaine (Dan) Bell of Maumee, and Karen Berton (Jack Rice) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two granddaughters, Shannon and Bridget Bell. He is preceded in death by a brother, Henry S. Berton; and sister, Mary E. Berton. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 16, 2007, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father William Hritsko officiating. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery with Coshocton County Veterans Council conducting military graveside service.
