"Paul Charles Bertling, Jr. 1937-2003

Paul Charles Bertling, Jr., 66, passed away peacefully in the company of his family and friends on Oct. 10, 2003, at his home overlooking the Cochise Stronghold. He was born on July 12, 1937 to Paul Sr. and Barbara (Delemeter) Bertling, in Detroit, Mich. The family moved to Phoenix in 1953. Paul graduated from Scottsdale High School and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1961. He was a copy machine technician in Phoenix for more than 25 years.

On Jan. 29, 1977 he married Holly Unterschuetz. In 1986, they bought 12 acres of land near Cochise Stronghold and began developing the Flying P-H Ranch. Paul fulfilled his dream of moving his home from Phoenix to Cochise in June 2001.

Paul loved woodworking and was on a first name basis at Home Depot and Sears in Phoenix. He rarely passed up a yard sale and therefore was an avid collector. Known for his hospitality, Paul hosted 18 annual picnics at the P-H Ranch.

You could always expect a friendly handshake or hug from Paul as he greeted the 8 a.m. congregation at Wynne Chapel in Richland Ranchettes. He enjoyed working with Operation Blessing and Commodities Distribution for the past two years. .

Survivors include his wife Holly of Cochise; sons Jeffrey, Stuart and Paul III, and daughters Adrianne (Bill Dishon) and Jacque, all of San Diego, Calif.; step-children, Michael (Janet) of Iquitos, Peru, Gary (Alice) of Tony, Wis., and Carolyn of Santa Barbara, Calif. Also surviving are his brothers Richard, Bob and Don; and his sisters Kay and Sharron, 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his cat, Misty. His parents preceded him in death.

Memorial services were held on Monday, Oct. 13, at Wynne Chapel. Cremation by Westlawn Crematorium. Contributions may be made to Wynne Chapel, c/o Building Fund, 374 E. Richland, Cochise, Ariz., 85606 or Charles Wm. Leighton, Jr. Hospice, 319 W. Grant, Willcox, Ariz., 85643. Services under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox."
