A girl with a loving, trusting nature, who touched the lives of so many, passed suddenly from our midst, early Saturday morning at the age of 21. Maria was a free spirit, who deeply cared for all the lives she touched.

She felt the joy and the pain of everyone she met, and everyone was touched by her love and caring. Maria was a very special person called forth by our Heavenly Father for His own plan.

She was born August 30, 1982 at the Feather River Hospital in Paradise - a beautiful day for all. She attended schools in the Chico Unified School District and graduated from Chico Junior High and Pleasant Valley High School in 2001.

Maria was a student at Butte College, she hoped one day to follow in her mother's footsteps and teach pre-school because of her love for young children. During her short life she was a very active member of her community. She was a Girl Scout for 12 years and a member of the track team at PV.

She cherished her time as Team Manager for the PVHS Volleyball Team. Maria bowled in several bowling leagues arid was a member of the Orchard Lanes Youth Bowling Team. She was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church, she loved her involvement as a member of the Catholic Youth Group, and was also a committed Eucharistic Minister at the Life Teen Mass. She also served as a Core Leader for the Junior High Youth Group at the Newman Center.

Her survivors include her infant son Joaquin Bertapelle of Chico; parents, Shan and Barbara Bertapelle of Chico; brother Giuseppe Bertapelle of Chico; grandmother, Bernice Bertapelle of Lincoln; aunts, Michele Curry, Jonae Bertapelle, Peggy Goodman and Debbie Hickel; uncles, Jim Ridel, Bob Haeussler and Tim Pitts. She also had a large loving family and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 7, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 5 pm Thursday and a Vigil Service will start at 6 p.m. Thursday evening at St John's Catholic Church. A celebration of life will follow the services at the Chico Masonic Family Center. Donations may be made in her memory to the Maria Bertapelle Scholarship Fund in care of the Brusie Funeral Home which is handling the arrangements.
