Earl L Bernstine, M.D., passed peacefully to heaven on May 1, 2012.
He was born on July 2, 1927, the first son of Earl H. Bernstine and Kathryn Smith Bernstine of Williamsport Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Binns Bernstine of York; a son, Earl W. Bernstine, D.O., and fiancee, Theresa Quinton, her children Joseph Wisenall and Olivia Quinton of York; and grandson, Earl J. Bernstine, Airman First Class, U.S. Air Force, currently on active duty in the Middle East; daughter, Susan K. Irving and her husband Frank M. Irving of Hatfield; son, Robert E. Bernstine; and grandsons, Eric and Ethan Bernstine of Chesapeake City, Md. Dr. Bernstine is also survived by a brother, Richard Bernstine, M.D., wife, Dorothy Bernstine; nephews, John Bernstine of Newton, N.J., and Mark Bernstine and his wife, Diane and their children Ryan, Chase and Evan Bernstine of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; brother-in-law, William H Binns, D.D.S., Professor Emeritus, Temple University, and wife Elouise of Portland, Ore.; and nieces Marci Binns of Philadelphia, Patti Binns Rosenberger and her daughter, Jenna Rosenberger of Hatfield.
Dr. Bernstine was graduated from Williamsport High School and Susquehanna University. He was a varsity football player at both schools. He was coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg at Susquehanna University. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Dr. Bernstine also was graduated from Thomas Jefferson University Medical School. He completed a medical internship at Williamsport Hospital and a surgical residency at York Hospital. He practiced and taught surgery at York Hospital until his retirement at age 65. He enjoyed his retirement with his family, especially his grandchildren. Dr. Bernstine also enjoyed playing golf, skiing, hiking, hunting, fishing, carpentry, and attending PSU football games.
Viewing and visitation will be at 11:30 a.m. until 1:45 p.m., with a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday May, 5, 2012, at Luther Memorial Church, 1907 Hollywood Drive, York, with his pastor, the Rev. Elizabeth C. Polanzke, officiating.
Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery.
