George A. Berlin was the son of William Berlin and, in 1860, was a tobacconist living in Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania. He married German-born Emelia or Amelia Will January 12, 1858, in Hanover and fathered Lydia (b. @1859), Elmer E. (b. @1863), and Anna Swigert (b. @1868).
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York July 23, 1862, and mustered into federal service in Harrisburg August 11 with Co. B, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry, at the rank of private. Entered Finley U.S. General Hospital November 16, 1862, with a "contused wound of side" probably suffered at the battle of Antietam and while there was also treated for dysentery. Honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863. Also enrolled September 9, 1864, with Co. B, 2nd New Jersey Cavalry, serving at the rank of private until discharged by general order at Vicksburg, Mississippi, May 8, 1865.
Died of consumption in Baltimore. Amelia died in Dallas, Texas, 2 May 1922, but the family shipped her body to Baltimore for burial.
