G. Clyde Bergman, Jr., M.D., 87, of Monrovia passed away at the Hospice of Presbyterian Inter-community Hospital in Whittier surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday, September 22, 2012. Dr. Bergman was born in Los Angeles on November 18, 1924 the son of the late George Clyde Bergman, Sr., M.D. and Gertrude Nelson Bergman.
Shortly after his birth he moved with his parents to Ethiopia while his father served as a Medical Missionary for many years in Addas Abba and Dessi. He was a WWII Army Veteran serving as a Surgical Technician. After the war he attended La Sierra University and Loma Linda University School of Medicine where he received a medical degree in 1954. Dr. Bergman joined his father in medical practice at Bergman Medical Group in Montebello, California, later moving the practice to Whittier. He continued practicing in Whittier until his retirement in February 2006.
His love of animals and nature led Dr. Bergman to an involvement with the Los Angeles Zoo, Los Angeles Natural History Museum, and Los Angeles Audubon Society. His life was filled with his family, sailing, skiing, tennis, photography, and trips around the world as a World Class Birder.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years Sherri McDevitt Bergman, a daughter Marilyn (Gary) Eggers of Loma Linda, and son George III (Gayla) Bergman of Monrovia from his late first wife Ruth Lance Bergman, a son Lars Bergman of Monrovia, and daughter Hillevi (Kris) Arvedson of Fort Drum, NY, and eight grandchildren: Tanya (Mitch) Fadem, Keith (Cara) Eggers, Caitlin Bergman, Lance Bergman, Dillon Lane, Flynn Arvedson, Rhys Arvedson, Gwyneth Arvedson, and four great-grandchildren: Oscar Fadem, Miles Fadem, Levi Fadem and Bria Eggers. He is also survived by his sister Phyllis (Clyde) Nash. Besides his parents he was preceeded in death by a sister Janet Bergman Sheldon.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 5 at 4:00 P.M. at the Whittier Area Community Church, 8175 Villaverde Drive, Whittier.
