Gladys Benson, 90, of Fort Collins died early Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at her home after a few years of declining health. A memorial service will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Stuart St., interment will follow the service in the Columbarium at Trinity Church.
Gladys Irene Berg was born April 30, 1916, in Minneapolis to Louis and Sevrine Berg. She graduated at the top of her class from the Washburn High School in Minneapolis. On March 28, 1942, Gladys married Gerald Benson in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. They moved to Gunnison in 1949 and came to Fort Collins in 1959.
She worked for more than 20 years as an accountant at CSU, originally as director of payroll and later in the Agricultural Experiment Station. But it was her church, her family and her friends that made Gladys feel alive. She was involved in a myriad of committees and activities at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Collins. She was generous, unselfish and was a true friend (she even maintained some friendships for 80 years). Gladys excelled at anything having to do with numbers, she loved to travel, was proud of her Norwegian heritage and was a longtime member of the sons of Norway. She had an artistic eye and a vary discerning eye for beauty, as did her mother before her. She was a wonderful cook and taught herself to play her favorite hymns on the piano.
Gladys is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Gerald; two daughters, Janet (Robert) Manning of Denver and Katherine Benson of Morris, Minn; one son Philip Benson of Las Cruces, N.M.; six grandchildren, Rebecca Mayes, Heather Benson, Robert (Julie) Manning III, Kate , Sage Benson and David Benson Steabler; and four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Ogden, Meghann Mayes and Kailei Benson.
