Debra Kay Jordan Benton

Debra Kay Jordan Benton, 58, of Maryville, passed away on the morning of Thursday, January 5, 2012, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga after a courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Eaton, Ohio, she was preceded in death by her father, Donald Leroy Jordan; and her husband, Thomas Henry Benton.

She was a graduate of National Trail High School in New Paris, Ohio, and attended The Ohio State University and Maryville College. An avid reader, she was a founder of the adult literacy program in Blount County and a long-time employee of Cracker Barrel, a job which allowed her to make the most of her love of people. She was a supporter of the Appalachian Ballet Company, a member of her neighborhood Rook club, and an accomplished seamstress, volunteering her time and skills to the ballet company and to Gina's Sewing Center in Knoxville. She shared her love of life and the outdoors with her family and friends, with regular hiking and cycling trips to the mountains.

Survivors include her mother, Alice Jordan Reneker; her stepfather, Jack Reneker (Papaw); siblings, Carol (Jon) Dembo, Jody (Jeff) Sneddon, Allen (Judy) Jordan, Larry (June) Jordan, and Linda Jordan; daughter, Jessica Benton; stepchildren, Thomas (Christy) Benton and Karan (Richard) Miller; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at Lakewood Memorial Gardens East in Chattanooga at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9.
