Born in Columbus, GA he was a Veteran of the US Army serving during WWII in Europe and served in a civil service capacity in Vietnam. He was a member of the VFW, a lifetime member of Masons and Lions Club international. Mr. Bentley was also a member of the Georgia Sportsmen Federation and was named sportsman of the year in 1958, and was one of the founding members and past commodore of the Macon Motor Boat Cub where he organized the disaster unit. His wife, Wilma Nell (Top) Bentley precedes him in death.
He is survived by a son, James Bentley, III of Milledgeville; daughter, Betty Lynn DeLoach of West Melbourne, FL; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; brother, Albert Bentley of Augusta and a brother-in-law, George McCarty of Greenville, SC.
