IN MEMORIAM
Montgomery County sentinel (Rockville, Md.), October 8, 1897

The late Allen M. Benson, of Seneca, who died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. O. B. Maus, Washington, D.C., on September 12th, 1897, was born in Maryland in 1826, and spent most of his long life in Montgomery county. His ancestors came to Maryland more than a century and a half ago, and the Benson family are now widely scattered over the whole State. For twenty-seven years Mr. Benson was employed by the C.&O. Canal Company, whom he served faithfully until failing health compelled him to resign. He was twice married, and by his first wife there was born to them eleven children, only four of whom now survive. Mr. Benson was a man of kindly and gentle demeanor and truly Christian character. His host of friends of more than half a century, and extending from Washington to Cumberland, will sadly miss him. He was buried at Monocacy cemetery, Beallsville, September 14th, by the side of his first wife.

Lock tender on the C&O Canal.

NOTE:
His birth year on his grave marker is 4 years before his parents were married? Census records and DC Death records show birth year as 1827.
