Last Rites for W. E. Bennett Here Sunday
Death Came Christmas Eve at Macomb to Life-Long Citizen, 76
William Edward Bennett, 76, life-long citizen of this immediate locality, passed away at 10:25 p.m. on Thursday, December 24, 1964 in St. Francis hospital at Macomb, where he had been a patient for only one week.
Mr. Bennett, a farmer during most of his productive years, had spent a part of his retirement in Blandinsville and for some time had been employed at the Syfert Implement Company. Enjoying the hospitality of his children, he moved about considerably and for the past several months had resided with his son, Carl Bennett, and family near La Harpe.
A son of Raymond and Lillie (Mesecher) Bennett, he was born in Swan Creek on March 30, 1888. He came to Fountain Green township as a child and attended the rural schools, including Elder Grove School. His marriage to Ruth A Hushaw occurred in LaHarpe in 1910. She preceded him in death on April 17, 1962.
Mr. and Mrs. Bennett had spent all their married lives in this locality, residing in LaHarpe, Fountain Green, Stronghurst and at Blandinsville. Mr. Bennett was a former member of the La Harpe Christian church.
He leaves to mourn his passing four sons and two daughters; Clarence Bennett of Adair, Robert, Carl and Clair Bennett, all of LaHarpe; Mrs. Kern (Elsie) Clover of Stronghurst and Mrs. Herschel (Vera) Caldwell of Fountain Green; five brothers and three sisters; Mrs. Ida Fenno of Harlen, Iowa, Mrs. Emmett (Virgie) Brunson of LaHarpe, Ira Bennett in Washington state, Charles Bennett of Burlington, Iowa, Mrs. Thomas, (Cora) Harding of Blandinsville, Elmer Bennett of LaHarpe, George Bennett of Macomb and Homer Bennett of Milan.
There are 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who also survive.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons in infancy, one daughter, three grandchildren, one brother and one sister.
Funeral services with Rev. Al Javne officiating were held on Sunday afternoon in the Banks and Beals funeral home. Burial was in LaHarpe cemetery.
