Mary was the daughter of Archibald Miles and Marie Y. Yale. Both of her parents were born in Cleveland, Ohio. Mary was born February 3, 1855.

She applied for admittance to the Washington Veterans' Home in 1926; qualifying as the widow of Christopher D. Hooker, who died in November 1910 and was buried near Hilliard, Washington. They had married July 18, 1883 in Kearney, Nebraska. Her husband was a civil war veteran, having enlisted November 26, 1861 in Kenosha, Wisconsin; served in Company M, 1st Wisconsin Calvary; and was discharged December 22, 1902 at St. Louis, Missouri.

Mary remarried to Milton T. Benham, who was living at the Veterans Home and was a veteran of the Spanish American War.

In 1926, Mary stated that she had four children living by her former marriage. They were Clinnton A. Hooker, 42, Independence, Wash - Theron C. Hooker, 40, Hulett, Wyo. - Dorothy E. Betts, 36 - Miami, Irene J. Johnson, Leard, South Dakota. Her nearest relative was Carrie E. Cooper, sister, of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mary died at the age of 77 years at the Veterans Home Hospital of Bronchial pneumonia. She was buried in the Home Cemetery.
