Dorothy Lucille Bender, the second child of David and Elizabeth (Rediger) Bender, was born on a farm ¼ mile east of East Fairview Mennonite Church on June 16, 1914 and died at Crestview Care Center in Milford at the age of 92 years, 6 months and 17 days. As a young girl, Dorothy attended school District #47. Many missionaries and church workers were welcomed in their home. She was called at an early age by the Lord for a special work and accepted Christ as her Savior in 1928.
There were years of depression, drought and sickness in the home. However, in 1948, she entered Hesston College, second semester without high school and earned her associate's degree. She began a teaching career in 1950 that spanned 34 years. Dorothy taught in Nampa, Idaho, as well as Staplehurst and Milford Public Schools in Nebraska. She also taught as a Missionary in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa. Along with her teaching, Dorothy continued her own education by receiving a Bachelor's Degree from Goshen College in Indiana and her Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Her philosophy was "a teacher is a human engineer working with the most priceless undeveloped material in all God's creation – the child". I Corinthians 10:13 became her life verse. Dorothy's life was enriched by students from Nebraska, Idaho, Africa, Puerto Rico, co-workers, dedicated faculty, members of her church and most of all, her family.
She was a long and faithful member of East Fairview Mennonite Church, rural Milford, serving many years as a Sunday School teacher. Dorothy also was a former member of District WMSC, MARP, Seward County Historical Society, and served on the Board of Directors for the Et-Cetera Gift and Thrift Shop in Seward and as a member of the Hesston College Alumni Board. In her spare time, Dorothy loved to read, crochet, knit, quilt and enjoyed the great outdoors.
She is survived by her brother, Merle Bender of Hesston, KS, her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Don Reber of Goshen, IN, 13 nieces, nephews, their spouses and a host of other relatives and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by parents and a brother, Merton.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, January 5, 2007 at East Fairview Mennonite Church, rural Milford, with Rev. Bill Saltzman and Rev. Anthony Troyer officiating. Memorials have been established to either the Milford Senior Center or East Fairview Mennonite Church.
