Howard "Jiggs" Benchoff, 92, of Rising Sun Retirement Home and formerly of Strickler Avenue, died at 10:05 a.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 1991, in Waynesboro Hospital. He was critically ill since entering the hospital on Feb. 16.
Born Feb. 14, 1899, in the Marsh area of Washington Township, he was the son of the late Samuel and Cora Baker Benchoff.
A lifelong resident of the Zullinger and Waynesboro areas, he was a graduate of Waynesboro Business College. After graduation, he taught at Martinsburg (W. Va.) Business School and later worked for 17 years for Pennsylvania Department of Highways. He also worked for five years in the Maintenance Department for the Borough of Waynesboro. Prior to retirement in 1978, he was a club steward for 25 years at the Waynesboro Owls Club, of which he was a member.
Mr. Benchoff also was a member of the Owls Nest and Waynesboro Fish and Game Association.
Surviving are two daughters, Alma B. Howe of Fayetteville and Donna A. Hovis of Waynesboro; six sons: Hobart E. of Arendtsville; Paul G. and Raymond W. "Jed", both of Waynesboro; Carl A. of Riverside, Calif.; Richard D. of Salisbury, Md. and Joseph F. of Mont Alto; 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter in 1980 and a sister in 1982.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St. The Rev. Don Stevenson will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
