JoAnn Clani Benally, 55, of Beclabito and Shiprock, passed from this life to be with her Creator on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, in Farmington, after a strong battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born Oct. 14, 1954, in Shiprock.
She was a graduate of Shiprock High School as well as a graduate of Fort Lewis College (B.A.) in Durango, Colo., and Lesley University (M.B.A.) in Boston, Mass.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Clani Sr.; mother, JoElla Clani; and grandparents, Gene and Mable Begay.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Benally; sons, Dineh and Marcus Benally; daughters, Diandra and Roxanne Benally; daughter-in-law, Joyce Arviso-Benally; grandchildren, Josiah and Sydney Benally; sisters, Lucille Clani and Louise Benallie; brothers, Clyde Clani, Timothy Clani and Thomas Clani Jr.; aunts, Betty S. Begay, Jessie Henderson, Sharon Riggs, Laura Lucero and Pricilla Redhouse; and uncles, Jim Harvey, Luke S. Begay and Carl Begay.
A memorial service for JoAnn will be at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 4, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Shiprock, followed at 3 p.m. by a celebration of JoAnn's life at the Shiprock Chapter House.
Interment will follow at her family's memorial cemetery in Beclabito
Pallbearers are Josiah Benally, Ronson Clani, Freddie Hobson Sr., Arvis Redhouse, Michael Redhouse Jr., Lew Riggs and Santana Yazzie.
Honorary pallbearers are Donald Benally, Dineh Benally, Marcus Benally, Michael Redhouse Sr., Michael Riggs, Freddie Riggs, Perry Benallie, Jim Harvey, Luke S. Begay, Clyde Clani, Timothy Clani, Thomas Clani Jr., Ted Tom, Charlie Francis, Freddie Napoleon and Vernon Henderson.
JoAnn will be dearly and greatly missed. She leaves an amazing legacy behind as a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, friend, teacher/educator, colleague and leader. Her memories and service lives on.
From her family, thank you very much to all for your love, support and prayers throughout JoAnn's life and during this time.
