John Daniel was born to Thomas William and Sarah Ann Griffin Bellamy in Fluvanna County, Virginia. He was first married to Elizabeth Emeline Shoemaker, the daughter of James and Malinda Booher Shoemaker, January 21, 1851, Claiborne County, Tennessee. Their two children are Sarah Malinda "Linda" Bellamy Walker and Leftridge Bellamy.

After the death of Elizabeth John married Mary Jane Cline on October 2, 1855, in Claiborne County, Tennessee. They had nine more children: Lucy Jane Harrison, James Walker, Nancy Alice Jones, Clora Ann Wolf, Thomas, Callie Octavia Gillett (1870-1964), Ollie Frances Eubanks, Cornelia "Cornie" M McIntosh King, and John G Bellamy.

John's wives were first cousins. Mary Jane Cline's mother Nancy and Elizabeth Shoemaker's father were brother and sister.

The family moved from Tennessee to Illinois in 1870. John was a carpenter and builder of homes, many of them in western Franklin County, where he first began contracting.
