Never Married

Charles H. Bell Rites Saturday---Deaf Mute Dies After Long Useful Life---Charles H. Bell, 77, died at his home in Borden last Thursday after a three week illness. Altough deaf and dumb, he had spent many years working at his trade of carpenter. Funeral services were held at Pleasant Ridge Saturday with burial in the cemetery there in charge of Littell Funeral Home. The contributed obituary follows: Charles H. Bell, eldest child of George W. and Fannie McCutchan Bell, was born Oct. 3, 1866 and departed this life Jan. 20, 1944 at the age of 77 years, 3 months, and 17 days. With the exception of two years, which he spent with his brother, George T. Bell, in southern Arkansas, he had lived his entire life in Clark County, Indiana. The last twenty years he made his home in Borden, where he died. For 60 years he had worked at the carpenter trade and was steadily employed because of his skill, faithfulness, and honesty. He was deeply interested in the cemetery at Pleasant Ridge and gave much of his time to its upkeep. Realizing the need of a new building at the cemetery, he solicited funds, did a great part of the work on the present house and has since looked after the repair of the same. During the preaching of Evangelist Richardson at Pleasant Ridge about 50 years ago he became a Christian, placing his membership at that place. He leaves to morn his departure one sister, Mrs. Ida Gillispie, of Monticello, and one brother, George T. Bell, of Charlestown, and eleven nieces and nephews. Two of these nephews are now in the service of the United States Army abroad. Because of his congenial, sunny disposition all will miss Charlie. However he will linger long in all of our memories. Funeral services were conducted Saturday by Evangelist O.W. Scott at Pleasant Ridge and burial was in the cemetery.
