The son of Oliver and Betsey Belcher.

Asa was a 32 year-old Butcher from North Bridgewater, MA, when he enlisted at Dedham, MA on July 22, 1861 and was mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on August 24, 1861 as a Private in Co. I. He was assigned to duty as a Waggoner with the Regiment. On Nov. 1, 1861, he suffered injuries to his back, hip, and shoulder, when struck by barrels of provisions he was assisting in unloading from a train. He remained with the Regiment through October 1862, but then was admitted to Trinity Hospital, Washington, from where he was discharged for disability on Nov. 1, 1862, due to his injuries.

Asa resided at Taunton following his military service, where he was a Grocer. He married Annie C. Cook the daughter of Edwin F. and Almeda W. of New Bedford, at Taunton, MA. They were the parents of Ida Annie F., born ca. 1858, and Edwin F.C., born ca. ca. 1861. Annie Belcher died at age 26 of Consumption.
Asa remarried to Emily R. Wilbor at Taunton, MA on July 18, 1866. They were the parents of Minnie L., who died at 3 months in 1868; and Oliver W., born Sept. 22, 1872.

He was a member of the William H. Bartlett, Post No. 3, Grand Army of the Republic, in Taunton, MA. Asa was 54 when he died of paralysis of the lungs and heart at Taunton, MA on Dec. 19, 1883.

On April 2, 1921, Ruth A. Carter was appointed as Guardian for Emily Belcher, who was judged an insane person by the Court. Emily Belcher died Dec. 6, 1921.
