Ethel Christine Bekkering was a native of Gaston Springs, Mississippi, but lived in Franklin, North Carolina, before moving to Clay County for several years. Ethel retired in 1978 after 30 years with General Motors Acceptance Corporation. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Savannah, TN.
Ethel Christine Brown was born in Calhoun Co., Mississippi, on July 1, 1924, the daughter of the late Hubert Franklin Brown and Ola Kirk Bowling Brown, and wife of the late Willard Woodrow Hammersley, who died February 20, 1983, mar. 1948, and James H. Bekkering.
Surviving are a son, James R. Tribble of Nashville, TN; a stepdaughter, Jeanne Chipman of Grand Rapids, MI; two stepsons, James R. Bekkering of Holland, MI, and William Bekkering of Westfield, MA; two sisters, Marie Hubbard and Kirk Darnell, both of Savannah, TN; two brothers, Franklin Brown of Stone Mountain, GA, and Jimmie Brown of Stockbridge, GA; and three grandchildren, two step grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 8, 2012 in Laurel Hills Memory Garden with the Rev. Johnny Foster officiating. Pallbearers were Tom Wolaver, Matt Bronyan, Kerry Hendrick, and Jim Parks. The family received friends from 12:30-1:30 Saturday afternoon at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Ethel C. Bekkering to the National Parkinson Foundation, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5018. Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville in charge of arrangements.
