Two well known Effingham couples who had watched their sons play in a Sophmore football game at Pana only a short time earlier was among seven killed in a two-car crash on state routes 32-33 at the Lake Sara road in Effingham.

Mr. Althoff was an employee of the Post Office and farmed his land in the Lillyville Community.

He was born April 9, 1931 in Effingham and graduated from Effingham High School in 1949. He was a member of the American Legion Post, Knights of Columbus, Elks and Holy Name society of Sacred Heart Church.

Mrs. Alyene (Beers) Althoff was born February 17, 1932, in Newton and was serving as head bookkeeper at Effingham Clay Service Company, where she had worked for 9 1/2 years.

A 1950 graduate of Effingham High School, she was secretary of the Republican Central Precinct committee and served as precinct six committeewoman. She was a member of Rec Board, Post Office Auxiliary, Alter Society of Sacred Heart Church and past member of Effingham Junior Woman's Club.

Surviving the couple are two children, Douglas, a sophmore at Effingham High School and Denise, an eighth grade student at Sacred Heart school. One daughter preceded them in death.

Also surviving Mr. Althoff are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Althoff of Effingham and a brother, Tom of Route 3, Effingham. Mrs. Althoff is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Beers of Effingham; sister, Mrs. Maurice (Alma Lee) Braun, Effingham; brother Capt. Larry Beers, of Belleville; grandmothers, Mrs. Ed Parker of Newton and Mrs. Emma Beers of Eldorado.

Funeral services for Mr.and Mrs. Althoff will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Church with burial following in St. Anthony Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Home, where friends may call after 12 noon on Wednesday.
