Janet D. Beaton
Janet Dorothy Beaton, 87, Fargo, ND passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at Elim Care Center, Fargo. Janet was born March 8,1921, in Moorhead to John & Emma (Meinke) Beckmann. She attended Moorhead Public Schools and was a member of the Moorhead High School class of 1939. While in high school, she was a standout artist, cheerleader, gymnast and a member of the National Honor Society. After graduation she continued her education at Interstate Business College in Fargo. On July 3, 1943, Janet married Francis J. Beaton of West Fargo at Camp Adair near Corvallis, Oregon. Francis was training troops in the Oregon mountains for deployment in WW II. Lieutenant Beaton landed in France, with his troops in January 1945 where he was wounded losing 90% use of his right arm in fighting during the wrap-up of the Battle of the Bulge. Francis died unexpectedly June 29, 1969 at age 47, the year following his term as National Commander of the Disabled American Veterans. Janet was a "stay-at-home" mom during the 40s, 50s and 60s, when that was the norm, maintaining a warm and comfortable place for her husband and sons to call home. After Francis' death, Janet sought and found work at the Fargo S & H Green Stamp Store and Bonnie's Hallmark in downtown Fargo. She continued working until an injury forced her to retire at age 74. During her life, Janet was an active member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. For decades she was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliaries and the Royal Neighbors of America. Survivors include sons, Michael (Carol) of Fargo, Timothy (Joan) of Moorhead, grandchildren, Mike (Betsy) Beaton, Jill (David) Suppes of Fargo, Jon (Kari) Beaton of Eden Prairie, Heather (Mike) Hart of St. Louis Park and Casey (fiancé Deveny Klammer) Beaton of Minneapolis, sister, Ann (Rollie) Lake of Underwood, MN, seven great-grandchildren, special niece, Linda Otterson and many additional nieces and nephews. Preceding Janet in death were her parents, husband, six brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law. Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 PM CDT Thursday, June 5, 2008 at the Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.
