Zackariah Calvin Beckham was born in 1824 in Tennessee. Zackariah moved to Arkansas and married Elizabeth Casey in 1843 in Parthenon, Newton County. They had thirteen children. When the war came, Zackariah enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company K of Hill's Arkansas Cavalry. He enlisted on June 7th, 1863 at Clarksville, and served until he was wounded in the right leg at the battle of Pilot Knob, Missouri on September 27th, 1864. He was captured and sent to the Yankee prison at Alton, Illinois. Zackariah died there from 'gunshot wound/disease' on January 17th, 1865. This marker is probably a cenotaph. Likely, Zackariah was buried near the prison, but it is possible that his family retrieved his remains and returned him to Walnut Cemetery.
