Enlisted in the US Navy on Aug. 3, 1861.
Becker was aboard the USS Cumberland when it was sunk by the CSS Virginia on Mar. 8, 1862.
He was discharged from the Navy on Apr 26, 1862.

He enlisted with Co. B, 55th Mass Inf. Regt. on May 31, 1863.
Promoted to Full Quartermaster Sergeant on Mar. 1, 1864.
Mustered out on Aug. 29, 1865 at Charleston, S.C.

He was commissioned a Trial Justice of Ward 7, Charleston Co., North Carolina on Mar. 22, 1875.

His brother, Dr Theodore J Becker, Sr, also served during the Civil War.

He is honored on the African-American Civil War Memorial.
