IRON RIVER - Dr. Robert J. Beckes, 62, of 406 Blossom St., passed away March 28.
He was born April 22, 1940 in Crystal Falls. The son of the late Andrew and Margaret (Montambo) Beckes moved to Stambaugh as a young child with his parents. He attended the Stambaugh Schools and graduated as an honor student from Stambaugh High School in 1958. He then attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. where he graduated with honors, subsequently continuing on to earn a degree in denistry from Marquette University in 1964. Thereafter he attended and completed medical school in 1968 with a degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He then entered the U.S. Navy as a medical officer serving from 1969 to 1971. Afterwards completing his medical internship and residency in general surgery in 1975 and becoming board certified in general surgery in 1976. Additionally he completed his second medical residency in plastic surgery in 1977 and became board certified in plastic surgery in 1983. He began his medical practice in Milwaukee and worked for many years as a hand reconstruction specialist. He later moved to Escanaba and continued practicing medicine until his retirement in 2002. During those years he would volunteer with Mission Honduras which included annual trips to Honduras, South America to offer medical and dental assistance for the people. After his retirement he returned to Stambaugh to make his home. He enjoyed flying and building model airplanes.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas (Susanne) of Pewakuee, Wis. and Robert of Kenosha, Wis.
Visitation was held Tuesday, April 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River. A liturgical prayer service was conducted at 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home and at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian with the Rev. Norman Clisch, pastor, to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. The West Side Veterans will accord military rites.
Pallbearers will be Larry Gibson, Keith Montambo, George Stockero, Allen Wodzinski, Ronald Peterson and Ron Cagle.
Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.
