Alvis Buford
"Al" Beard, 93, of Martinsville, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born in Roanoke, VA on April 5, 1918 to Harry Pendleton Beard and Eva Vaughan Beard. Al served in the Army during WW II in Field Artillery in the European Theatre. He retired from DuPont as a supervisor after 33 years of service and was also a professional photographer throughout the area for over 35 years. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church in Martinsville and the Smith-Hamilton Sunday School Class. He had also served as Secretary/Treasurer, served on the finance committee and was still active as an usher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Katherine Gunter Beard; one sister, June B. Carter and one brother, Harry P. Beard, Jr.

Surviving is his son, Al Beard, Jr. and wife, Robin of Lexington, South Carolina.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church in Martinsville with Pastor Ron Mateer officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Burial Park with military honors.

A visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel.
