12 May 1969: A head-on collision on Route 72 claimed the lives of the parents of a Lebanon minister and that of a prominent Lancaster dentist Sunday about 12:30 p.m. One other person was seriously injured in the accident, which occurred two miles north of Manheim. The Rev. Cornwell Beamesderfer, 75, Richland RD 1, died in the Lancaster General Hospital at 4:30 p.m. He had been admitted with head, chest and abdominal injuries. His wife, Sallie Beamesderfer, 81, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Dr. Charles A. Callis, Manheim, deputy coroner. They were the parents of Rev. Harold E. Beamesderfer, 340 S. Eighth St., Lebanon, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church. Also pronounced dead at the crash scene was Dr. Clarence V. Halpin, 77, 1544 New Holland Pike. John A. Cox, 36, Potomac, Md., son-in-law of Dr. Halpin, was admitted to the constant care unit of the Lancaster hospital with chest injuries. State Troopers John Kelly and George Fry said the northbound driven by The Rev. Mr. Cornwell Beamesderfer crossed into the southbound lane at a curve in the road and collided with the car operated by Cox. Police reports indicated Mrs. Beamesderfer was seated in the front beside her husband and Dr. Halpin was a passenger in the front seat of the other auto. Both autos were demolished. Damages were estimated at $4,500. The Rev. Mr. Beamesderfer was serving as pastor of the Oregon United Methodist Church, Lancaster County. He was born in Heidelberg Township, Lancaster County, and was a son of Albert K. and Elvin Nagle Beamesderfer. The Rev. Mr. Beamesderfer was reared in the home, which is now occupied by the Myerstown American Legion. He was a teacher in the Myerstown elementary school before entering the ministry. A graduate of Albright College, he was also an elder of the East Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Lebanon Lodge 226, Free and Accepted Masons; Zembo Temple, Harrisburg; Patriotic Order, Sons of America, and IOOF both of Myerstown, and the Odd Fellows, Lebanon Lodge No. 121
He served with the Fishburn Church from 1942 to 1948, then with the lona Church, from 1949 to 1950. He held the pastorate of the Coatesville United Methodist Church until 1956, when he took the pastorate of the Oregon United Methodist Church. He had planned to retire from the Oregon pastorate and become a parish visitor at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Lebanon, where his son is pastor. The Rev. Mr. Beamesderfer was to have delivered the invocation Tuesday evening at a banquet to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Odd Fellows Lodge in America and the 124th anniversary of the Lebanon lodge. Mrs. Beamesderfer was a daughter of Isaac and Susan Donough Ebling. She was a charter member of the Women's Society of World Service of the United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Church of Oregon, and a member of Chapter 249 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Coatesville.
