Margaret Ellen (Beachy) Hershberger, of Fairview, died peacefully on May 20, 2016 following a nearly five year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 73 years old and died in the loving presence of her husband at The Home at Wellspring Lutheran Services in Fairview.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Virgil Hershberger of Fairview; her children, Keaton (Shannon) Hershberger of Roscommon and Ryan (Michelle) Hershberger of London, England; her four grandchildren, Anthony (Maria) Hershberger, Spencer Perez, Delilah Hadstate and Hope Hershberger, and four step grandchildren, Ricky, Shaylene, Travis and Aaron Hadstate; three great-grandchildren, Haylee, Hannah and Harper, and one step great-grandchild, August. She is also survived by four siblings, four in-laws, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters-in-law.
Margaret was born on October 11, 1942 in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania to Joel and Annie (Hershberger) Beachy. She attended Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana, and graduated with a degree in nursing in 1965. She married fellow student Virgil Hershberger the same year and the pair moved to Wilmore, Kentucky where she worked in a Lexington hospital and her husband attended seminary. The couple then moved to Fairview in 1967 where her husband was pastor of the Fairview Mennonite Church until his retirement in 2000.
Until her own retirement in 2008, Margaret enjoyed using her education in nursing to serve the community. She worked in doctor’s offices in Mio and Fairview, provided annual Flu Clinics on behalf of Summit Health and performed paramedical exams throughout Northeast Michigan on behalf of life insurance companies. Along with two of her friends, she brought the teaching of Lamaze classes to Oscoda County and she, herself, gave birth to the first Lamaze baby at West Branch Hospital in 1974.
In addition to her nursing career, Margaret enjoyed being a pastor’s wife and considered it a privilege to enter into the lives of many in the community. She was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Church, where she taught Sunday school classes for preschool and grade school children and was a regular volunteer in the church nursery and on the church hospitality committee. The desire to serve others in the church was instilled during her formative years, where, as a member of a small congregation in Grantsville, Maryland, she took her share of responsibility by leading the worship singing when she was a teenager. It was here that she became a committed Christ follower, and her love of music and singing, especially of the hymns, continued strong throughout her life.
Margaret was a loving mother, wife and grandmother who had a spirit for life, and in an unassuming way, enjoyed serving others. She will be remembered as an appreciated member of the community who brought cheer to others, and was always ready to lend a helping hand.
A visitation is scheduled on Monday, May 23 at the Lashley Funeral Home in Mio from 3 – 9 PM, and Tuesday, May 24 from 10 AM until the time of the funeral services at 11 AM at the Fairview Mennonite Church, with Pastor Dave Price officiating. In accordance with Margaret’s wishes, cremation will follow.
Memorial gifts will be channeled to local charities HIS Love Family Resources, Love, INC. and Habitat for Humanity of Oscoda County.
