Birth: Jan. 7, 1890
Union County
South Carolina, USA
Death: Aug. 25, 1970
Muscogee County
Georgia, USA

Clayton Braxton Beacham was the third son and fourth of seven children born to Zachary Taylor Beacham (1854-1926) and his wife Emeline Amanda "Emma" Steen (1858-1937). His paternal grandparents were Jeremiah Washington Beachum and his wife Mary Jane Taylor, of Anson County, NC, and his maternal grandparents were Joseph Steen and his wife Elizabeth Ann Taylor, of Chesterfield County, South Carolina.

Clayton's family had lived in Anson County, NC, but moved to Union County, SC before his birth. He was living in Laurens, SC in 1917, and subsequently served in the U. S. Army during World War One. I believe he was probably stationed for a while at Fort Benning, as he seems to have settled at Columbus, Georgia sometime before 1920.

On 5 December 1920, Clayton married Minnie Edwards in Muscogee Co., Ga. (probably in Columbus). I am afraid I haven't been able to learn anything about her. Apparently, she died sometime between 1924 and 1930. Clayton and Minnie had two children, Maude V. Beacham (c. 1921-?) and Capt. Clarence Lee Beacham (1924-2004).

In the 1940 census, Clayton was listed in Columbus, Georgia, and was proprietor of a cafe. His children Maude and Clarence were living with him. Maude was working as a waitress in her father's cafe, and Clarence was a student.
Clarence joined the Army, rose to the rank of Captain, and served in WW II, Korea & Viet Nam. He and his wife are buried at the Ft. Benning Post Cemetery, Find A Grave # 44719692. I am afraid I don't know what happened to Maude, but I just learned her married name was Hunt.

Apparently, sometime after 1940, Clayton Beacham married Maggie (Margaret?) Ethel Saint (1905-1977, Find A Grave # 42198340), widow of Lee Roy Daniel, and became stepfather to her daughters, Naomi Daniel (1923-2008, Mrs. G. B. Vinson, Find A Grave # 24918107) and Lorranine Daniel, Mrs. W. P. Tutherow, living in 2008.

Many thanks to Christine Thacker who created this memorial and kindly transferred it to me, a cousin.
