Alfred A. Bayless, probably one of the oldest residents of Frankfort, died at his home, 53 Main avenue, last night at 10 o'clock, aged 92 years. His death terminated an illness of about nine weeks' duration of a complication of diseases.

Mr. Bayless for many years was one of the best known contractors in this section of the state. He was born in Butler county, O., Feb. 17, 1825, the son of Platt and Frances (McGary) Bayless. He grew up amid early pioneer conditions and in 1833, when a small boy, he came with his parents overland from the old home in Ohio to Tippecanoe county, settling on a farm seven miles east of Lafayette. He remained on the farm until he was 20 years old and then took up the carpenter's trade. In 1845 he went to Lafayette where he worked at his trade. He put in the first plate glass windows ever used in that city, making the sash for the whole front by hand.

On May 26, 1847, Mr. Bayless married Harriett Parke. After living in that city two years he removed to Dayton where he remained until 1869. Then he went to Cass county and engaged in the saw mill business, operating a mill two years, when it was burned. He then moved to Logansport where he did contracting until 1877 in which year he moved to Frankfort.

Built Coulter House Here

His first contract work here was the Coulter House. He also built the old Coulter opera house which was destroyed by fire several years ago. He built the Third ward school building twice. He remained in active contracting and carpentering until 1897 when he retired.

Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bayless, four of whom are living: Mrs. C. B. Sine of Indianapolis; Sylvester, of Memphis, Tenn.; William O., of Hammond, and Miss Laura E. Bayless, at home. There are also four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Mr. Bayless was raised in the Presbyterian faith. He was the oldest member of Clinton Chapter No. 52, F. & A. M. of this city. Had he lived until May 26 he and Mrs. Bayless would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon from his late home. Rev. H. L. Crain will officiate, assisted by Q. A. Kennedy. Burial will be made at Dayton, the funeral cortege making the trip overland.
