BARINGER, NELLIE E. (BAUM), 85, of White Avenue, Warwick, died on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at home. She was the wife of John W. Baringer, Sr.
Born on Long Island, New York, a daughter of the late William J. and Florence G. (Waterfield) Baum, she lived in Warwick for 45 years.
Mrs. Baringer was an avid bingo player.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, John W. Baringer, Jr. of Warwick; four daughters, Jackie N. Johnson of Kill Devil Hills, NC and Wanda J. Marshburn of Roxboro, NC, Frances M. Creasy of Chesapeake, VA, and Juanita I. Clewis of South Norfolk, VA; a sister, Nancy L. Watson of Hampton, GA; twenty grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
She was proud of her Nags Head and Outer Banks heritage, including the fact she was the great-granddaughter of Capt. Malachi Corbell, keeper of Station #5, U.S. Life Saving Station. He was awarded a Silver Medal in 1877 for his heroism in the 1875 rescue of two of four men who were tossed from their boat during a gale while blue fishing near Caffey's Inlet.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen L. Johnson and a son, Marcus R. Johnson.
