Dr. Harry L. Baum of 900 Bonnie Brae Blvd., prominent Denver physician, died early yesterday in his home after a heart attack. He was 63.
Funeral services have not been completed. The Olinger Mortuary, Speer Blvd., is in charge of arrangements.
A long-time resident of Denver, Dr. Baum was born Sept. 7, 1887, in Shelbyville, Ill. He received his degree in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania, and came to Denver, where he began practice in 1911.
Dr. Baum was widely known as a nose and throat specialist. He was the author of many articles in leading medical journals. He retired in 1945.
Dr. Baum also was active in Masonic affairs. He organized the Emulation Lodge No. 154, A.F. and A.M. in 1921 and served as its master the following year. He was a member of Colorado Consistory No. 1; Denver Chapter No. 2, Royal Arch, and was a Knight Templar. He was past sovereign of the Red Cross of Constantine.
In 1938, Dr. Baum was grand master of all Colorado Masons. For the past 13 years, he had been chairman of the correspondence committee of the Grand Lodge of Colorado, A.F. and A. M.
Noted over the nation for his medical research, Dr. Baum at one time was chief of staff at both Children's and Presbyterian Hospitals. He was a member of the Colorado Otolarlyngological Society, the American Academy of Opthalmology, The American Bronco-Esophogological Society, The Denver County and Colorado Medical Societies and the American Medical Assn.
As a hobby, Dr. Baum enjoyed writing and had authored a number of plays.
He married the former Ellen N. Schryver here in January, 1937.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, Harry Jr. and William Baum; a daughter, Mrs Willis Frank, and a sister, Mrs. George Mattson, all of Denver and a brother, Dr. Wells Baum, of Salem, Ore.
I would like to add that his first wife was Martha Belle Shumate, the daughter of Quincy Shumate and Louise Elizabeth McLean of Tennessee. They were married in Denver Colorado on December 14, 1915. Harry Jr and Mrs Willis Frank (Martha Belle "Marty" Baum) are his two children by his first wife Martha Belle Shumate. William Baum is his son by his second wife Noreen. He and Martha Belle Shumate divorced in 1936.
