William's sister Emma Baugh when she was in her 90s, dictated their life history to her daughter in law who published it and gave it out to her family as a gift. Emma talked about her brother dating a girl in town (Betty Black) and how he came home with a mask ("false face") and scared the daylights out of her because she thought the devil had gotten her. She said William always was a tease. William was born at Peale's Crossroads in the household of Jonathan Peale. The Peale's Crossroad is a historic site that still stands today. With his wife Mary Elizabeth Black, he had 6 children. After her death in 1915 from Tuberculosis, he met and married his second wife Beulah and moved to NC for work after 1920 and lived there almost 25 years until his death. After he died he was brought back to Rockingham for burial with his family at Keezletown. He made furniture and some members of the family still have pieces.
