Wife of John Adam Bauer. They both died in Europe, but this is strictly a memorial. But they were likely buried in the Roppeviller cemetery, obviously given a traditional 'green burial.' -— according to old family legend Philip Bauer and his brother [Adam] Bauer-who settled near Evansville Indiana on a farm-immigrated from Germany to San Francisco to dig gold circa 1850. Philip Bauer married Catherine Hoffman in 1853 (probably an 1853 protestant marriage in Cincinnati), then in 1856 records show they were married at Saint Boniface Catholic church in Louisville Kentucky. Their first child Mary Bauer was born in 1854 and records show that phillip bought land near Greenville Floyd county Indiana in spring of 1853. According to these dates Phillip would have immigrated from [Roppeviller, then] Germany to San Francisco in circa 1850 (1849 was the height of the gold rush). His mother died in 1851 so she probably died about a year after these two of her children--Adam and Philip Bauer--left their childhood family home in [Roppeweiler] Germany. So did their mom die from a broken heart?? Their father Jean Adam Bauer had died in 1844, presumably in Roppeviller, Lorraine. ------ Family legend states that the two brothers won free passage, to San Francisco and the gold mines, in a locale raffle which was conducted in their parish or home community.
