He was the orphaned son of Lancelot and Ann Durham Battersby of Wigan, England. He came to America in 1841 with "kind friends". He became a Methodist circuit-riding preacher but on a trip into northern Pennsylvania he was converted to the Luthern faith. He was a very esteemed member of their clergy. He married Emily Davis Conner and had 6 children. He died of tuberculosis. He was originally interred at Glenwood Cem. and reinterred here in 1892.
